The 20-bar average volume on the 5-Min chart represents approximately 100 minutes of baseline activity. A current bar with 3x this average means more than three times the normal amount of stock changed hands in 5 minutes. This is a raw volume screen with no price direction or indicator requirement -- it detects the anomaly, not the context. The 3x threshold is high enough to filter out routine above-average bars and target only truly exceptional volume events. On liquid large-cap stocks, 3x average 5-minute volume typically indicates a major catalyst: earnings surprise, block trade, macro announcement, analyst action, or options-driven hedging.
A volume shock event requires immediate context assessment before trading -- it is a trigger to investigate, not a trade signal by itself. Direction (is price rising or falling?), news, and broader market conditions all determine the trade thesis.
