A 1% drop on a single 5-minute candle is a significant intraday event — for a $100 stock, that is a $1 move in 5 minutes, roughly 12x the typical single-bar move in calm conditions. There are no volume, VWAP, or trend filters layered on top. This is a raw price velocity screen — it detects the event, not the context. The simplicity is intentional: it surfaces any stock meeting the threshold and leaves interpretation to the trader. The 5-minute timeframe makes this sensitive to individual large prints, news catalysts, and stop-loss runs.
A 1% single-bar drop has different implications depending on whether it occurs at the open, midday, or into the close, and whether it breaks a prior level or is intrabar noise. At the open, it may be a gap continuation; midday, it can signal a news event or a technical breakdown; late session, it may reflect forced selling or options pinning. Failure modes: (1) the bar immediately reverses — a single large sell order or algo print that gets absorbed quickly; (2) market-wide dip where every stock drops 1%, making the signal non-selective; (3) pre-market or extended-hours data bleeds into the session, distorting the calculation.
