Volume above the 20-period average (on 5-minute bars, approximately the last 100 minutes of baseline activity) confirms that the move has participation behind it. A breakout without volume can be a single buyer pushing price briefly above resistance before it gets sold back; a breakout on elevated volume means multiple market participants are transacting above the prior ceiling, which tends to sustain the move. Volume on the breakout bar matters most in the first 30-60 minutes of the session when institutional programs are active. The best setups tend to show volume expansion on the break bar followed by sustained above-average volume on the next 2-3 bars — what traders call a "volume expansion continuation."
