There is no volume, indicator, or trend filter — it is a pure price velocity threshold.
A 2% hourly gain is most actionable when it occurs on expanding volume, breaks a meaningful technical level (prior day's high, VWAP, multi-week resistance), and appears in the first two hours of the session when institutional flow is active. Midday 2% hourly gains on thin volume carry less weight — they often fade as the next session opens. Failure modes: (1) the gain reverses within the next 1-2 hours because it was driven by a single large buyer program that exhausted itself; (2) broad market rally pulls every stock up 2%+ on the same bar, making the signal non-selective; (3) the stock was already extended and the 2% hour is the final exhaustion move before a pullback.
